Good enough but not as good as the Primacy MXV4

November 21, 2023The 60 day return policy would be of considerably more use if I had bought these tires in the winter. Because I bought them in the summer, I got to see the good parts first. A brand new car will not give you the best miles per gallon for some time so when you buy new tires because the car comes with something that is not up to snuff, you don’t get the whole picture right away. Back in 2013, I was going to buy a car that came with some “stone” tires, something like putting Chuck Ts on Ben Johnson and I got some Primacy MXV4, every tire since pales in comparison including the CrossClimate 2. The key point of difference is that the Primacy IMPROVED the gas mileage beyond what the EPA suggested or people reported on the EPA website, the CrossClimate has resulted in a significant reduction in gas mileage in a vehicle expected, because it is a hybrid, to improve on the gas mileage of the previous vehicle. The other point of distinction is the tire’s traction on ice, compared to the Primacy MXV4, the CrossClimate leave lots and lots to be desired. The CrossClimates seem to have sacrificed traction for the depth of snow they can handle. It seems that some traction on hardpack was also sacrificed to soften and quiet the ride, I would much rather have the traction. I have also had some Premiers (the first version of the Michelin compound that gives consistent braking distance with wear, etc… IT DOES) and their traction on ice wasn’t the MXV4s but it was better than the CrossClimates. The CrossClimates are exceptional tires on wet pavement —even with standing water— and are remarkable on dry pavement and frankly, in my opinion, neither hard riding nor noisy. If I could have brand new Primacy MXV4s then, I would want those because even though they would not be as good in deeper snow, I could feel them grab onto the ice and had confidence that a turn, once begun, would end in the straight line that followed. The CrossClimates leave me wondering. My other car has the Premiers and I can safely say that even without AWD, I feel more comfortable, more secure, that the car will turn (I am talking about turning slowly from a secondary to a tertiary road) and complete the turn. Having said all that, note that ALL of the tires are Michelin. I am fortunate to be able to purchase Michelin tires because yes, the slogan IS true, so much IS riding on my tires, I just have some problems. The CrossClimates might give me 85k miles to the Primacys 70k but I would have liked more traction on ice. Ice, unlike snow, is something that you find accidentally and unevenly distributed on the road as well as something that gets worse rather than with time. You don’t really have to drive in the falling snow, snow will stop falling and, inevitably, a snow plow will go by soon thereafter; however, that patch of ice is like the joker in a deck of cards. I would like to hear what Michelin has to say concerning the gas mileage and the reduced traction on ice because these are not cheap tires.
Excellent upgrade after replacing the tires that came on my Jetta

June 21, 2024So I drive for a living as a courier and purchase tires every couple of years. This is my third set of CrossClimate's and the grip and handling is such a huge upgrade from the stock tires that come on the vehicles. It's always a little stark because as tires get to the end of their life, you feel them lose their grip in wet and dry situations, but they roll very easy which leads to the best mileage you'll ever get in a vehicle. When swapping to these you instantly notice the grip on turns, how straight the car stays even when tires slightly spin in the rain, and the significantly shorter stopping distance. I typically drop about 4-5 mph in small sedans upon initial switching, but the safety advantages make driving so much easier on my mind! We've had these on a 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback, a 2015 Toyota Sienna Minivan, and now on my 2023 VW Jetta. The improved performance and safety was felt immediately when switching from all the vehicles previous tires, including another Michelin in the van.
So while I wish they rolled a little better for gas mileage, I still have to give them 5 stars for overall performance and safety!
*They are also very quiet!

July 19, 2024These tyres give me incredible confidence in all conditions. I regularly drive a route along some rugged, poorly maintained country roads and the tyres have eaten up every mile with zero issues - wet, dry, mild off-road...the car has stayed planted with no slippage or spin, even under spirited acceleration.
One characteristic of these tyres that I've never before experienced is the complete lack of any pull when driving through deep puddles. I am so used to the car pulling into deep water and having to mitigate it through steering, but this is just not a factor with these tyres. The often talked about unique tread design clearly works in this regard.
Ride noise and comfort is par for the course, but given older Minis are known for their rock hard suspension, this is no surprise. It's certainly not any worse, which is all that could be expected. The tyres do have a tendency to pick up small stones and pebbles which possibly impacts the feeling and road noise, but I cannot be sure.
As far as wear goes, with only 13 weeks and perhaps 1.5k miles, they still look brand new. I would expect as much from premium tyres, and it would be better to see what they're like after another year. Judging other people's reviews, I think they'll do just fine. Yet to experience any snow or ice.
CrossClimate 2 live up to their name

April 10, 2024When I bought these tires in the spring of 2023 I had my doubts they could handle all four Canadian seasons. We all know the age-old joke about how all-season tires are actually three-season tires. They still are, but the CrossClimate 2 aren't all-season tires, they're all-weather tires. From the high-humidity heat of the blazing summer to the -25 C deep freeze of winter, these tires perform with confidence. Rain weather is no problem, with barely a hint of hydroplaning. The traction feels more or less the same across all weather conditions. On the downside, these aren't low rolling resistance tires and won't shine for fuel economy. They're also more noisy on the outside in hot weather, but its not noticeable inside. Keep in mind these tires are directional of you’re rotating yourself. On the whole, I recommend these tires to everyone who asks. Excellent all-weather performance, smooth ride, high-speed rating, and long treadwear warranty make the Michelin CrossClimate2 the best tire out there today.
